Of Special Interest:
$5 million in buildings are under construction, a county courthouse, the federal building, new schoolhouses, two theatres, several churches, new auditorium, a million dollar terminal station, several manufacturing plants, Southern Pacific hospital, two sanitariums and several warehouses, garages and scores of residences. Many of the buildings are 8-10 stories high.
In Harris County there are 50 school districts, 170 school trustees, 160 teachers [5 of them male],
Work on Rice Institute, backed by a bequest of the late William M. Rice amounting now to about $8,000,000, will start soon. Architectural plans have been accepted. Over 300 acres of land has been purchased two miles west of the city, upon which the buildings will be erected and grounds laid off. A million dollars will go into the construction.
The Houston turning Basin on the ship channel is two miles east of the city limits and is now capable of accommodating eight or ten ocean vessels at one time. The basin is 1,100 feet across at the bottom, not including the length of the slips, by 1,900 feet in length. It has a depth of from 18 to 21 feet. Railroad tracks will go right up to the ship. Due to all of this, the tonnage going through the city has nearly doubled since the last directory.
Southwestern Telegraph and Telephone Company has increased the number of its telephones and now has close to 11,655 phones in use. Another Telephone company is scheduled to operate, the Houston Home Telephone company. The directory now has telephone exchanges.
The street railway continues to increase its area of coverage.
The automobile has become symbolic of up-to-dateness. Houston has twenty –two garages, and is reaching the one-thousand mark in number of automobiles. .
