Of Special Interest:
Three new railroads have been completed to the city, with another nearing. A great terminal railway station almost in the heart of the city is complete. The Buffalo Bayou project is nearing completion, making Houston available to ocean going vessels. Rice Institute is nearing completion. There has been a recent swelling of the tide of immigration to the coast country from the Sabine river on the east, to the Rio Grande on the west, the bulk of which pours into Houston by rail on the way to settlement at points near or far generally to the West..
The Panama Canal is near completion, making the port of Houston very important. Trains will carry all sorts of freight from all over the country for passage through the Ship Channel to the ocean and thus through the Panama Canal.
Right-of-way has been secured by Houston Electric Railway Company to construct the interurban line connecting Houston with Galveston which will connect to the street car system. This is to be in operation within a year.
The salaries for city officials now total $730,122, with the mayor earning $13,600. The 1902/1903 Directory showed him earning $3,000.
