Director Mary Frances Townsend thanked the Snack Committee and everyone who donated food for today’s meeting. She also asked for people to volunteer to help with the lunch boxes at the Sayre Special Event on March 18.
1st VP/Program Chairman Alan Leeds made the following announcements:
* Marj Lowe will be speaking at the Bear Creek Genealogy Meeting on Thursday, May 9.
* The Sayre Event on March 18 is an all day event and members are given a discount when they pay for it.
* The next meeting is April 1. The speaker will be Mary Anthony Startz speaking about “Researching Spanish Patriots of the American Revolution” including a discussion of the Cuban Papers.
* Since the speaker needs to return to Galveston after the meeting, we will not be taking him to lunch.
Alan Leeds then introduced the speaker for today, Casey Edward Greene, who is the Rosenberg Scholar at the Rosenberg Library in Galveston. Mr. Greene has been engaged for the last few years in extensive research to establish the identities of the victims of the 1900 Galveston Hurricane. There is not one definitive list and he is cross checking and developing a new database based on city directories, census records, land records, and other sources. This database will include as much demographic information about the victim as can be found. The database will eventually be put online and fully searchable by the public. Numerous questions were asked after the presentation.
Following the presentation, Alan Leeds and Marjorie Lowe drew numbers for the door prizes.
President Marjorie Lowe adjourned the meeting.
These minutes are respectfully submitted by Glenda Hayes, Recording Secretary.
