The meeting was called to order at 10am by President Marjorie Lowe. The invocation was given by Andra Vanarsdel. The membership recited the pledges to the US and Texas flags.

Treasurer Sharron Newhouse noted that the bookmarks with the meeting dates on them were done by our new Publicity Chairman Dana Leeds. Bookmarks printed after the first of the year will also have the dates of Marj Harris’ genealogy classes and the date of the Sayre’s special event. Sharron also mentioned that lunch order forms were available for the Nov. 5, 2016 all day DNA meeting. They are located on the back table. Since she was unable to connect to the internet, Sharron estimated that HGF has about $21,000 in the bank [ She later confirmed that the actual amount was $20, 145.] Sharron also shared that HGF had hired an auditor. The auditor’s report will be presented at a future meeting.
Director Mary Frances Townsend explained to the membership a new procedure for the coffee and snack table. She was seeking volunteers and passed around a sign-up sheet.
President Marjorie Lowe said that from now on, the media table would contain only genealogy information. She ask members to bring any journals that they might have to be sold. The sale of these journals is used to raise money for HGF.
Recording Secretary Glenda Hayes informed the membership that the minutes for each general meeting will be posted for review on the website after each meeting. A single hard copy will be available on the day of the next meeting. At the next meeting, if there are no corrections or additions, the minutes will then be marked as “approved” on the website posting.
Membership VP Rae Bryant discussed raising the dues for 2017 from $20 to $25. The issue was discussed and will be voted on at the Oct. 1, 2016 meeting. If it passes, anyone paying their 2017 dues by the end of Dec., 2016 will only have to pay $20 instead of the $25. Rae also shared that due to her and Walter Steets efforts, members can now do a single name search on the website of all the old RECORDS and other databases on the HGF website.
Program VP Alan Leeds introduced the speaker for today, Irene Walters. Irene has been a librarian at the Clayton Genealogical Library since September of 1997. Her presentation was titled FINDING ANCESTORS BY NOT SEARCHING THE KNOWN SOURCES. Irene shared with the membership numerous ways to discover information about our relatives when that information seems to not exist. She also discussed what to do when there seems to be conflicting information. Irene centered her talk on name searching, location searching, date searching, and neighbors and family searching. Many questions were asked by the membership.
Alan Leeds announced that HGF was taking Irene Walters to Napoli’s for lunch. He then took a count as to how many others would like to participate. Alan, assisted by
Marj Lowe and Irene Walters, gave out the door prizes.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:37 am.
These minutes are respectfully submitted for review by Recording Secretary Glenda Hayes.
